When you are diabetic, there is nothing more important in your life than maintaining healthy glucose levels. The problem is, though, that diabetes and weight loss often become parallel terms. In other words, many sufferers of type 2 diabetes complain that it is nearly impossible to lose weight when you have this form of diabetes.

Why Bother?

Well, one of the most important reasons to lose weight if you have diabetes is to feel better and lead a healthier lifestyle. Type 2 diabetes and weight loss are interconnected in that even if you only strive to lose fifteen pounds, the benefits may include a reduction in blood pressure, lowered glucose levels, better cholesterol levels, and much less strain on your hips, knees and ankles. All of this means a lessened risk of heart attack or stroke and/or the ability to maintain mobility. So, if you won’t do it for yourself, do it for those who love you. Yes, weight management with type 2 diabetes is difficult but not impossible.

Don’t go it Alone!

When you have something like diabetes that interferes with blood glucose levels, a “diet” is much more than simply reducing food intake. In fact, reduction of the level of glucose in your diet can result in low glucose levels in the blood or issues with hypoglycemia, particularly if you are taking medication. Therefore, never take matters into your own hands when it comes to diabetes and weight loss! Check with your doctor to find the best weight management plan for you. If it does not work, then you and your doctor can device alternative treatment plans for weight management.

The Latest in Drug Therapy for Diabetes and Weight Loss:

According to the American Diabetes Association, the current most effective drug on the market for helping those with type 2 is topiramate. While weight loss is expected to be something that anyone can accomplish with a little willpower, those with this form of diabetes find weight loss a struggle of monumental proportions. Topiramate, however, has been found to help those studied to lose weight as well as control glucose levels. As with any drug, though, there are potential side effects, but these were only present in a few of the patients studied and were as minor as a mild tingling sensation.

It is a fact that type 2 diabetes and weight loss is difficult; however, it is not impossible. Begin simply by understanding the benefits of losing weight both for you and for those who love you. Next, talk to your doctor as often and as honestly as possible, so that she can help you devise plan of action. Then, if that still does not work, perhaps it is time to try a medication like topiramate.

To control or prevent diabetes, it is crucial to do regular exercise. Exercising does not mean that you should do heavy work outs but a moderate level of physical activity, consistently, is adequate to keep your diabetes under control.

Add to Onlywire

Exercise is one of the most important activity that one has to do to stay fit. Exercise is equally important both for a diabetic as well as non-diabetic.

For diabetics, exercise is crucial because it helps in keeping your sugar levels controlled.

Exercise does not necessarily mean a rigourous two hours of outdoor activity. A 45 - 60 minutes of moderate intensity exercise like brisk walking should also do the trick. But, you may undertake any form of exercise, which ever suits you.

Exercising mainly helps in two things, first, it keeps your blood sugar under control and second, it prevents the accumulation of fat in your body.

If, at any point, fat starts to deposit, it is high time to realise that you desperately need a work out and being a diabetic only adds to the urgency.

An obese person won’t be able to control his / her sugars as well as a fit person because majority of obese people are physically inactive which adds to their problem of uncontrolled sugar levels.

People say it just takes 21 days to form a habit… So you now know what to do.

Just go to that park in front of your house and walk for 21 days (an hour a day)

It might seem difficult at first. Take a friend along with you who also needs a dose of exercise or a music player or better still if you don’t get any of that, go out just to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. But make a vow not to come back home without at least an hour of exercise.

Exercise And Type 1 Diabetes

Studies have not proven yet that diabetes control and exercise are associated with type 1 diabetes. But exercise, in itself has many positive health benefits. It has been proven to improve short term blood glucose control and, therefore, is recommended for most of the people who have type 1 diabetes. People who have type 1 diabetes need to pay attention to their blood glucose levels before, during and after they exercise.

This exercise and diabetes can sometimes take a downward swing and may cause a blood sugar emergency. In which case, certain measures need to be taken to prevent this from happening. Exercise and diabetes can sometimes cause hyperglycemia, or high blood sugars, especially if these levels were high before the workout began. Monitoring blood glucose levels before and after workouts and keeping track of you glycemic response to different physical activities are very important when dealing with type 1 diabetes and exercise.

Type 2 Diabetes And Exercise

Living a totally inactive lifestyle is one of the major causes for developing type 2 diabetes. It is a fact that obesity, type 2 diabetes and no exercise have high correlation. Losing weight will decrease the insulin resistance of type 2 diabetes. Studies have proved that type 2 diabetes and exercise have better A1c profiles. Along with nutrition, exercise is one of the first defense in controlling type 2 diabetes. One of the leading complications in type 2 diabetes is heart disease. Regular exercise will lower triglyceride levels and blood pressure thereby reducing the risk of heart disease.

Diabetes and exercise need to be said in the same sentence more often when trying to control all categories of diabetes. Exercise is something the body needs to do to rejuvenate itself and to make circulation more prominent. It is very healthy to have a regular exercise program for people without diabetes and so it can only give a positive result to anyone who suffers from this disease. Exercise and diabetes should remain together to remind all people with diabetes how important regular physical activity can play in a longer and healthier life. It is not asking too much, for someone we love, to walk around the block at least once a day.
